【First Hackathon】What Kind of App Development Ideas Came Up?
Hello, I am Moe. I am working as an intern in Monstar Lab Bangladesh base. In this article, I will introduce Hackathon which was held in our company a few days back!
What is Hackathon？
Actually, I myself came to know about this word, hackathon, on the day it was introduced in our company. For those who are like me, let me explain a little about hackathon first.
A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest) is a design sprint-like event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers, project managers, and others, often including domain experts, collaborate intensively on software projects. The goal of a hackathon is to create usable software or hardware with the goal of creating a functioning product by the end of the event. (Google)
Flow of this event
For the first time, it was held in our Bangladesh base, and the event was as follows.
S M Asad Rahman (CTO of Monstar Lab Bangladesh) said “Let’s do Hackathon!” and kicked off the event!
- Explanation about Hackathon
- Submitting Ideas – within two days of the announcement.
- Presentation of Proposals (current problems and ideas of solution)
- Final Presentation of Development Results – 5 days after the presentation
The event was about 1 week long in total. It was very fast! Only 5 days to do all of these!
1．Explanation about Hackathon
The goals of this Hackathon are as follows
・Increase our innovation capacity
・Improve team bonding, decrease “sectionalism”
・Improve sense of ownership, improve productivity
・Practicing better, efficient delivery to clients
・Improve our internal process
・Giving value to the society
Hackathon ideation was not limited, rather it was encouraged to solve any kind of problem, such as related to “our company operations”, “Bangladesh”, “software development”, etc. It was a free participation event.
Employees listening to the explanation of Asad, CTO
What surprised me when the hackathon started many employees asked me, “What is your idea?”, “I’m looking forward to listening to your presentation!”, “Looking forward to my presentation!” etc. I wasn’t going to attend the event at first, but it seemed I was expected by many colleagues, and thus I decided to make a presentation and submit my idea!
A total of 36 ideas were gathered!
Many employees actively participated, in spite being an optional event, and the ideas were gathered from about 60 employees!
3．Presentation of Proposals
Score points while listening to the presentations
Just before the presentation, the presenter speaking order was decided by lottery, and each person then went forward and gave a presentation for about 2 minutes.
Every time Asad drew a lottery, I was thrilled when my turn would come. But when I was called by name, I just wanted to run away from this place! However I gathered courage to present in front of everyone. I was very nervous to give my presentation in front of all, but everyone listened seriously and I managed to finish it!
What is the result of idea presentations?
While listening to the presentation, everyone scored and some of the rankings are here!
The first place went to “Dengue Fever Spot Detection App” that impressed me!
In this app, the range of actions before the person who suffered from dengue fever is aggregated, and it is possible to see on the map where the most number of people have developed dengue. The app proposed that it may be possible to identify places which are at risk of dengue fever and thus focus on mosquito control is expected.
And Dictionary for Japanese to Bengali Application, an app that our another intern student thought was ranked in the top ten. (By the way, I was in 30th place.)
Develop the ideas
After the idea presentation, development began. An idea proponent then formed a team of their choice and developed for the final presentation in 5 days.
I could see teams meeting during the lunch break and even developing after work hours.
Talking with team members after work
This teams are also seriously under development
4．Final presentation of development results
After one week,it was time for the final presentation. There were 5 final presenters!
I would have liked to introduce all five, but for now, I will skip all but introduce two projects.
I interviewed Saad and Tanveer who were the representatives of different team.
1 : Platform Connecting Different Tech Entities
We further ensured that this product serves as a knowledge base for an entire tech company.
2 : Bot for internal communication tools, BOB
Please let me know if there are any special features of BOB.
What is the final result of Hackathon?
Stay tuned for the final results.
Hackathon was held for the first time, but there were many employees actively participating. We were able to gather a lot of ideas and proceeded to development. I initially thought that the period of about a week was short, but the commitment of the engineers to development was commendable.
In this blog, we introduced the Hackathon event, but various events are held at the Monstar Lab Bangladesh base each year. (Other events will be introduced in another article) Employees are highly independent and actively participate in events, so every events are exciting! Moreover, there is no strict hierarchical relationship, and all employees have the right to speak equally.
